About Spiritual Direction

The way I understand spiritual direction is as a chance for you to dig deeper Into your own sense of God, and where God is in your life. There’s no expectation that you bring any particular set of religious beliefs; the emphasis is on your personal experience of the divine. I am not looking to convert you in or out of anything, but rather to explore with you how you understand God, and where you hear the divine in your life. My job is to do my best to hold space for wherever it is that you want to go. While I might at times offer my own thoughts and observations, I do so not as any kind of authority, but simply as someone who is on this journey with you and is interested in what is happening with you spiritually. You are always the authority on your own experience.

People come to spiritual direction for a lot of reasons, but a common one is simply wanting to have a deeper connection with God, or greater awareness of where God is in their life. Sometimes people are in a discernment process as they face significant life decisions, or are trying to make sense of a life crisis that has shaken their faith. Regardless of what brings you to this work, spiritual direction gives you time to pay closer attention to what is happening with you spiritually, in a place where you can set aside things like the expectations of others, or what you might feel like you are supposed to think or believe, and really focus on your own experience.

Spiritual direction is not therapy, and I strongly encourage anyone dealing with significant mental health challenges to work with a trained therapist. However, it can be a rich complement to therapy; whatever difficulties you may be navigating, spiritual direction gives you a chance to ask about where God is in all of this, and how things that are happening both internally and externally are affecting you spiritually. I do not see spirituality as a realm that is separate from the rest of life, but rather as a dimension that encompasses all of life experience, which means that you are welcome to bring in any part of your life that you wish to discuss, with the expectation that we will consider it in the context of spirituality.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, please let me know! I’d be happy to meet with you for an introductory session at no cost to see how it feels to work together, and answer any questions you might have. Not every director is right for everyone, and if it doesn’t feel like a good fit, there’s no pressure to continue; that’s entirely your call. But if you’re curious, please reach out; I always feel honored to hear about people’s faith stories.
